Whitworth Track and Field Sets Records at Twilight Meet

SPOKANE, Wash. – A pair of Whitworth track and field athletes broke their own records at the 3rd Annual Whitworth Twilight Meet at Boppell Track on Thursday.

Senior Keegan Shea broke his own record in the men’s hammer throw with a throw of 196’ 4” to win the event. Sophomore Kerry Wright won the women’s javelin with a toss of 151’, which broke her own record in the event.

The Pirates won nine events between the women and men, headlined by Shea and Wright’s record performances. Sophomore Mary Data won the women’s shot put with a throw of 41’ 5” and freshman Danielle Openiano won the women’s discus with a distance of 129’ 4”. Junior Wes Sitser won the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.15. Sophomore Alex Hardlund won the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.64. Senior Jonathan Hoff claimed the 110 meter hurdle win with a time of 14.83. In the field events, freshman Lucas McGill won the high jump, clearing 6’ 4 ¾”. Junior Joe Green won the pole vault with a height of 15’ 9 ¼”.

Shea, Wright, Data, Hoff, Green and sophomore Brett Bajema turned in personal best performances that improved their standing on the Division III performance list. Keegan Shea’s hammer throw moved him to fourth in Division III and Kerry Wright’s winning javelin toss moved her up to second. Mary Data moved up to 31st in the women’s shot put. Jonathan Hoff’s 110 hurdle time ties for the 12th fastest time this season, and Joe Green’s pole vault is the 11th best in Division III. Brett Bajema jumped into the top 25 with a javelin throw of 185’ 7”.

The men placed first in the team standings with 182 points, edging Montana, who finished second with 147 points. The women finished second in the team standings with 102.5 points. Montana finished first in the women’s team standings with 225 points.

Next up, Whitworth travels to Tacoma for the 2014 NWC Championships, hosted by Puget Sound, April 25-26.
