Vandals Prep for Third Saturday Scrimmage

by Idaho Athletics Media Relations

MOSCOW, Idaho – Football players have 15 opportunities to impress their coaches during spring drills and for University of Idaho players, Saturday marks opportunity No. 12 with the Vandals’ third scrimmage.

The scrimmage begins at 10 a.m. at the Kibbie Dome.

Competition throughout the ranks has prevented coach Paul Petrino and his staff from solidifying depth charts yet but, he said, that’s a good thing.

“The competition is really tight,” he said. “This is an opportunity for them to go out there and compete and play real well.”

With competition ramped up across the board, doing all the little things right is what will impress.

“Hopefully,” he said, “we’ll execute a lot better on both sides of the ball.”

To date, neither sophomore Chad Chalich nor redshirt freshman Matt Linehan has laid claim to the starting quarterback job. That, Petrino said, is fine.

“They have not separated yet,” he said. “Right now, we’re preparing like they’re both going to be the starter. There’s nothing wrong with going into the summer (without a starter named). They both will compete all summer and get better.”

Similar competitions are on-going across the field where newcomers are pushing returners for positions on the depth chart. After Saturday’s scrimmage, they have just three more opportunities to make themselves known with practices Wednesday (a change from Monday) and Thursday with the Silver and Gold Spring Scrimmage Friday at 7:30 p.m.
