Recreational Marijuana Sales License Lottery Starts Today

Posted: Updated:
NBC RIGHT NOW-- Monday the Washington State Liquor Control Board will start a lottery for recreational marijuana licenses.

Initiative 502 allows recreational marijuana use statewide, but also limits the location of pot stores to select areas.

This lottery will be held for any cities or counties where there are more pot-shop applicants than licenses allotted.

Right now 2100 people applied for the 334 retail licenses.  The State Liquor Control Board will give out the licenses and they will be divided up between those cities and counties across the state.

In Yakima County there are 34 licenses waiting for approval and in Benton and Franklin counties there are 43.

The lottery will wrap up on Friday.

Staff at WSU’s Social and Economic Sciences Research Center along with the state lottery's accounting firm will draw the numbers later today.

The winners will be given priority for the licenses, but they will still have to pass financial investigations and meet other requirements before the board actually issues any licenses.

The first retail sales are expected to begin in July.
