"Free the River" Signs Appear at Closed Bitterroot Stretch

Posted: Updated:
BITTERROOT VALLEY - "Free the River" signs have appeared along a closed portion of the Bitterroot River.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks closed the river this month to floaters between the Woodside and Tucker fishing access sites near a diversion dam.

A 6-year-old girl drowned near the dam last summer and officials said there have been a couple of close calls there this month.

FWP officials said they're working on an assessment on how safety can be improved at the dam.

They said the stretch of the river will likely remain closed until the river's high flows stabilize in July, when additional warning signs should be in place.
