Air-1 Helps Locate Stranded Woman And Child After Boat Sinks

Posted: Updated:
PEND OREILLE COUNTY, Wash. - Three people, including a 2-year-old girl were rescued near Horseshoe Lake Thursday night after their boat sank.

The Pend Oreille County Sheriff's Office says they received a call from 37-year-old Jeremy Arnold of Spokane just before 9:00pm on Thursday. Arnold told dispatch he and his girlfriend and daughter were on Horseshoe Lake when their small fishing boat sank. Arnold swam to shore with his daughter as his girlfriend followed. Once on shore they began walking back to their car, but were unable to find their way out. The Sheriff's Office says none of them were wearing clothing appropriate for the cold night and rain storms ahead.

Arnold told his girlfriend and daughter to wait on top of a ridge while he went to get help. Unable to find his car, Arnold actually jumped back in the lake and swam about 200 yards across the lake to a home to call 911.

Deputies, Search and Rescue and a Marine Patrol unit were dispatched to the area. Spokane County also launched Air-1 to help with the search.

Eventually Air-1 was able to locate Arnold's girlfriend and daughter and hovered above the air while dealing with bad weather to direct the ground units to their location.

Arnold's girlfriend and daughter were both treated for mild hypothermia and taken back to their car and reunited with Arnold.
