The 38th running of Bloomsday is this Sunday, May 4, and with all of the wacky outfits, the shirts, the elite heats and other general hoopla of Spokane's famous event, it is easy to forget that going 11 Kilometers around the Lilac city can be about more than just a race.

Recently, SWX's Michelle Dapper learned the story of three local women who have battled back from what life has hurled at them and see Bloomsday as a symbolic hurdle waiting to be leaped over.

Teresa Ackerman, Katy Taylor and Kyla Koarmiski have spent time regretting the choices they have made, fighting abusive relationships and have even been homeless. But thanks to the local St. Margart's Shelter as part of Catholic Charites,  these women have begun the climb to create stable lives, just like they will when climbing the Doomsday Hill in Bloomsday 2014.

In completing Bloomsday, this trio hopes to show their families that life is all about getting back on your feet. Enjoy Dapper's feature for the full story.
