Body of Missing Selah Teenager Possibly Spotted in Roza Canal near Zillah

YAKIMA, WA.--A teenager from Selah is still missing, but now, search and rescue teams have moved their resources to Zillah where someone says he might have seen the boy in the Roza Canal.

Grab the gear and make a plan. Yakima County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Teams were back out along Roza Canal searching for a possible drowning victim.

Sheriff's deputies said they were alerted to a situation last Wednesday when employees conducting routine canal checks noticed that something wasn't quite right.

"Came across some clothing, and it looked like someone had slid down the canal bank into the water," said Sgt. George Town with the Yakima County Sheriff's Office.

Detectives soon got involved and discovered that there is a missing 18-year-old boy out of Selah.

Friday afternoon, search and rescue teams and the Bureau of Reclamation searched the area near the power station with an underwater camera and divers. Deputies said this is an area where people in the past have ended up, but there was no sign of the missing teenager.

Crews are back out continuing the search Saturday. Crews said it's going to be a very difficult and dangerous search.

Deputies said areas around the canal are gated off for a reason.

"Water temperature yesterday was at 51 degrees," said Sgt. Town. "You get in that water, and it's fast moving, it's very difficult to survive very long in that."

Deputies said the reasons why the boy entered the water are still unclear and foul play hasn't been ruled out.

"As far as whether we have just an accident here, or if there's other factors involved that's an ongoing investigation," said Sgt. Town.

Deputies said they're keeping in close contact with the boy's family.

Search and rescue said the boy's name will not be released at this time.
