Mary Wacera had just enough to fend off Lineth Chepkurui right before the finish line to win Bloomsday on her first attempt on Sunday, May 4, in Spokane, Wash. Wacera and Chepkurui, both from Kenya, were neck-and-neck as they descended down Monroe Street, with Wacera pulling away in the closing meters to break the banner at the entrance of the Monroe Street Bridge.

"The difference was that I was fast at the finish, that's why I beat her," Wacera said after her victory.

Wacera, 25, was the champion at the 2014 World's Best 10k and she currently holds the 10th fastest 10k time in the World (32:06). Wacera also as a silver medalist, with a time of 67:44, at the 2014 World Half Marathon Championships. Her final time of 39:36 was just enough to put another win under her belt.

Chepkurui, 26, is a three-time Bloomsday champ (2008, 2009 and 2010) and crossed the finish line at the 39:38 mark for a second place finish. Risper Gesabwa, 25, took third place with a time of 39:53.

The wind came into play in the times of this race with times upwards of a minute over what they have been in recent years.

"At about 10 k, the wind was very strong and it was pushing us backwards," Wacera said.

The fastest American time for the women came from Mattie R. Surver of Colorado Springs, Colo., she finished with a time of 40:59.

Sara Slattery of Spokane, Wash. came in at with 42:25 on the clock, which was the fastest time in the Washington State women's division.
