Six Pirates Named All-NWC Baseball

SPOKANE, Wash. – Six Whitworth University baseball players have received honorable mention consideration on the 2014 All-Northwest Conference team, which was released this morning by the league office.

Senior Taylor Isadore, along with juniors Spencer Ansett, Cory Mack, Joshua Davis, Nick Motsinger and Thomas Wakem were mentioned on the team following a 13-22 season in which the squad went 10-14 in NWC games.

Isadore made the list as a relief pitcher after posting a 1.86 ERA in 18 appearances and 29 innings.  He finished with a 2-3 record and posted three saves.  His total relief appearances set a school record.

Ansett and Mack made the honorable mention list as starting pitchers.  Ansett finished 3-2 with a 3.58 ERA in ten starts.  Mack went 4-4 with a 3.57 ERA in 10 starts.  Mack led the Pirate pitching staff in innings-pitches (63) and in strikeouts (41).

Davis, a catcher, batted .305 and tied for the team lead with three home runs.  He also tied for the team lead with 21 RBIs. 

Shortstop Nick Motsinger led Whitworth with 29 runs scored and batted .277. He was one of three players to hit three home runs, leading the Bucs in extra base hits by adding nine doubles and a triple. 

Wakem made the list as a designated hitter after leading Whitworth with a batting average of .325.  He also led the team with ten doubles and tied Davis with 21 RBIs.

      Pasta led Saints to victory in her return to the court with a 55-49 win over William Penn just 12 days after tearing her ACL.

      Montana Western advances to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2003. They will play six-seed Menlo (Calif.) on Saturday, March 17 at 2:00 p.m.

      Gonzaga was selected for its ninth NCAA Tournament in 10 years and 10th overall.

      The Zags are 30-20 all-time in the NCAA Tournament appearances with eight trips to the Sweet 16, three trips to the Elite Eight, one Final Four and an appearance in a national championship game.

      The Saints will play on Friday at 9:45 versus the winner of Vanguard and Bethel, while Providence will take on MidAmerican Nazarene on Friday at 6:15.

      The Pavilion on the campus of UC Davis proved to be one of the toughest places in the country to play this season. The Idaho Vandals learned that first hand, falling to the Aggies 82-62 in the first round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament on Thursday.

      Johnathan Williams was the star for Gonzaga today, ending with a game-high 19 points on 8-12 shooting. Josh Perkins (16 pts) and Norvell Jr. (15pts) were the only other Zags to finish the game in double-figures.

      Roach averaged a team-best 18.7 points per game this season, which ranked third in the NWC.
