YAKIMA, WA - It's a parents worst nightmare - getting a call that their baby has been severely injured while in someone else's care. A woman in Cowiche is now in custody and accused of  causing a brain hemorrhage in an 18-month old baby.

A 29-year-old woman is in custody today for allegedly shaking a baby violently while caring for the child. It all happened inside this home. According to police, Marisela Avila-Alaniz admitted to becoming frustrated with the child. Later the child became unresponsive and had to be airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Doctors found that there was bleeding in the baby's brain and part of the baby's skull had to be removed in an emergency surgery. The sheriff's office says they are always upset to see a child hurt.

"It's not necessarily shocking because we do run into this frequently enough that it's not shocking," Detective Mike Russell of the Yakima Sheriff's Office said. "But it's disappointing. It's disappointing to see people get so upset that they take it out on the little ones that can't defend themselves and who can't speak up for themselves."
The sheriff's office recommends that parents always look for licensed child care providers to ensure the safety of their kids. Police say Alaniz was simply a babysitter and knew the family of the child. The baby is currently in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center.
