Spartan Race Founder Designs And Builds Course

Posted: Updated:
BIGFORK - A barbed wire crawl, military-style hurdles, a sandbag carry-- more than 5,000 people will work their way through this brutal race course. Montana's Spartan race is this weekend in Bigfork.

"It's probably our most brutal sprint course in the world thanks to Montana terrain," said Joe DeSena, the founder of the Spartan races.

Just taking a look at the treacherous course, arguably the first question that comes to mind is who would, or even could, do this. It's more than three miles of obstacles up a steep hill. Only in its second year in Montana, the Spartan race has 1,300 more people signed up than last year. Rob Brisendine with the Kalispell chamber of commerce says 65% of the racers are coming from 100 miles away or more.

"We target the special events on our shoulder season so we like to think of this as kind of the kick off to summer," said Brisendine.

He's already gotten calls from hotels saying they're completely booked up for the weekend.

This race is a little more special than some of the others put on around the world. Once a year DeSena personally designs the course and he's out now in Bigfork watching his masterpiece come to life.

"Yesterday, I went through as we were building the course a hail storm, little bit of snow, rain, and sun all in one day. You get four seasons here in one day, and so I wanted to pick some place brutal to design the course myself and Montana won," explained DeSena.

The first gun goes off at 6:00 a.m. Saturday, but races will be going all day. Food, spots for spectators, and a medic will be there.

Friday night, racers can start carbo loading at Sportsman Ski Haus in Kalispell. Anyone can come out for the live music and you can even get in some practice spear throwing.
