KHQ.COM - People like to open up the house and their windows in the spring, but beware. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office says open windows are a target for intruders trying to get into your home. Crime Prevention Specialist Deputy Craig Pendell has the following advice when it comes to windows:

First, use a dowel or rod in the window track. It keeps an intruder from being able to slide the window open. Cut the dowel a few inches shorter than the track so that you can crack the window for fresh air but keep someone on the outside from sliding it open any further.

Choose curtains that allow you to see out and keep the person on the outside from seeing in. This way, they won’t be able to see any valuables inside your house and you’ll be able to see anyone lurking nearby.

Next, plant pokey bushes next to your window. Don’t let them get too big and bushy or it will allow intruders to hide in the space between the bush and your home. Instead, plant bushes with thorns that will keep intruders from getting close to the window and peering in.

Deputy Pendell also says rocks next to windows are also a good idea. Pendell says that because they make noise when a person walks on them, they have the potential to scare off a possible intruder and alert you to what’s happening outside your home.

Finally, remember to keep your windows locked. The extra precaution is one more thing that will make your home less attractive to a thief and keep you from becoming a victim.
