Columbia Park Pond Stocked with Trout for Kids Fishing Derby Saturday

Posted: Updated:
KENNEWICK, WA - The trucks backed up to the water's edge Wednesday morning, and within minutes the pond in Kennewick's Columbia Park had the best fishing around.

The 17th annual Kids Fishing Derby is Saturday, May 10th. Wednesday, trucks dumped thousands of trout from local hatcheries in the water. 1,200 to 1,400 kids have already registered to get new rods and reels and start landing the lunkers in a few days.

"The river is tough fishing and this makes it really easy for them. And it's been pretty successful, we've given away 28,200 rods and reels in that 17 years," said Kids Outdoor Experience Chairman Ken Johanning.

There's still time to register for the fishing derby, but you have to do it in person. A representative will be at the pond Thursday and Friday. Kids 5 to14 to 14eligible, the cost is $10, and they get a new rod and reel.
