WALLA WALLA, WA - The 40th Annual Walla Walla Balloon Stampede presented by Gesa Credit Union kicked off Thursday morning at Howard Tietan Park in Walla Walla.

It's the longest running balloon stampede in the Pacific Northwest and the second oldest in the nation.

More than 30 balloons are featured this year including a giant Coca-Cola bottle balloon, the Liberty Bell and one of the original "Columbia" balloons from 1974.

Cheri White, a pilot for the Columbia REA balloon, says this is the sixth year she's traveled from Texas to Walla Walla for this event.

"It's one of my favorite events of the year," said White. "I look forward to the people of Walla Walla, the Columbia REA--the cooperative-- here is wonderful and the area is just beautiful."

Balloons launch at 6:00 a.m., Friday through Sunday, at the Garrison Middle School field. The Night Glow is scheduled for Saturday at dusk, on the Walla Walla Community College campus.

Balloons will not launch if the weather is bad.
