Kids Catch Fish for First Time at Annual Fishing Derby in Columbia Park

KENNEWICK, WA - Saturday was all about getting kids hooked on fishing at Columbia Park in Kennewick.

Nearly 1,400 kids circled the Family Pond at the park for the 17th Annual Kids Fishing Day. Children, ages 5-14, were given a rod and reel with hopes of catching their first fish.

We found 7-year-old Alexis Miller patiently fishing with her mom. After about an hour of waiting, she finally reeled one in.

"I caught one," said Miller, excitedly screaming.

Reporter: "How was that?"

"Great and it was super great because it was super fun, but strange," replied Miller.

Immediately after Alexis caught her first fish, she reeled in an even bigger catch.

The fishing derby is organized by Ken Johanning from the local non-profit, Kids Outdoor Experience. In the last 17 years, he has given out more than 28,000 rods and reels.
