Zags Take Series With 5-2 Win

SPOKANE, Wash. –
The Gonzaga University baseball team scored four runs in the fifth inning en route to a 5-2 series clincher over UC Davis in a shortened game at Patterson Baseball Complex Sunday. The game was called after the Aggies batted in the sixth inning because of a travel curfew.

Gonzaga (22-26) wins its seventh series of the year while UC Davis falls to 20-27 overall.

Caleb Wood got the Bulldogs big inning going with his second hit of the game. With Mitchell Gunsolus on first base, Wood doubled the Evan Wolf offering down the left field line for a run. Jimmy Sinatro followed two batters later with a double to right field to give the Zags a 3-2 edge.

The scoring continued with Sam Brown’s RBI base hit to center field and Cabe Reiten’s single through the left side for another. The rally was the last at bat for the Zag, as the travel curfew took effect after the Aggies last at bat.

Kenny Smith (2-5) got the win for Gonzaga after working 2.2 innings of relief. He allowed just a hit while striking out three. Smith entered the game in fourth inning for Gonzaga starter Taylor Jones who allowed four hits and two unearned runs in 3.1 innings.

Despite being a shortened game, the Bulldogs had three hitters with multiple hit performances. Brown went 3-for-3 with an RBI, Reiten went 2-for-2 while driving in two and Wood went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Bulldogs only have four regular-season games remaining. On Tuesday Washington State University visits Spokane for the series rubber match. West Coast Conference play comes to an end Friday as Pepperdine University is in town for three games.   

NOTES:
The UC Davis travel curfew was set so that no new innings could begin after 4:50 p.m.

Gonzaga recognized its senior class of Ben Brown, Karl Myers, Brock Slavin, Kenny Smith and Payden Cawley Lamb before the game. Earlier in the day the seniors graduated with the rest of the 2014 class.
