YAKIMA, WA - Business leaders from around the valley listened to Yakima City Council Members Monday afternoon as they talked about current initiatives and major accomplishments in the community.

The Greater Yakima Chamber of Commerce hosts the Annual State of the City Luncheon to get an update on what's happening in the city, how things have gone and where they're going.

City council members spoke about many different issues including public safety and finances. The city says some major accomplishments in 2013 include bringing serious crime rates down by more than 20 percent and having more money in reserves than ever before.

Mayor Micah Cawley said the State of the City Luncheon is a good time to promote all the good things happening in the city and erase some of the negative attitudes people hold.

"{People} Can get caught up in some of the hype that is negativity about Yakima, instead of coming together for a solution," said Mayor Cawley. "So that's what I like, is kind of the partnerships that are forged from this type of presentation."

The city said some priorities for this year are to increase Yakima Fire Department staffing levels to improve response capabilities, create and invest in more special events to bring people downtown, and invest $10 million into fixing up the Yakima Airport's Taxiway.
