PASCO, WA - There are still many questions when it comes to e-cigarettes and whether they actually help someone kick the smoking habit.

However, the City of Pasco wants to lump e-cigs and regular cigarettes in the same category when it comes to where they're allowed.

Right now, state statutes ban smoking in indoor facilities, but city council members want to ban smoking of cigarettes and e-cigs within 25 feet of playgrounds, swimming pools, shelters and splash pods.

"So it defines those as places where smoking e-cigarette use would also be prohibited the same way that it's prohibited in most buildings in the state, under the state statute," Deputy City Manager Stan Strebel explained.

If the council approves the ordinance that would ban cigarettes near playgrounds, pools and shelters - then Pasco's rules would go beyond the state statute.

Council members will also vote next week on a provision to put e-cigs in the same category as regular cigarettes and regulate them the same way. This means e-cigs would be banned near parks, pools and shelters.

Currently, there is no city regulation of e-cigs.
