Idaho's Beaman Named ITA Region Coach of the Year

MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman is adding to his list of coaching accolades, taking home ITA Mountain Region Women’s Coach of the Year honors on Tuesday.

Beaman was the 2014 Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for both the men’s and women’s teams, and was the 2013 WAC Men’s Coach of the Year and the 2011 ITA Mountain Region Men’s Coach of the Year.

Beaman joins Oregon’s Nils Schyllander – who was Northwest Region women’s Coach of the Year in 2005 and men’s Coach of the Year in 2014 – as the only two coaches on record (dating to 2001) to win the award on both the men’s and women’s side.

Beaman took over coaching the Vandal women just two days before the start of the 2014 season, after former coach Myriam Sopel accepted another position.

Beaman and assistant coaches Abid Akbar and Art Hoomiratana led the Idaho women to a 19-6 overall record, the program’s first conference championship, the program’s first NCAA tournament berth and six weeks in the national rankings - including a program-best rank of No. 51. The Vandals put together an 11-match winning streak that lasted nearly two months, getting out to an 11-1 start to the season.

“I would like to share the credit with the assistants that were a critical part of the team’s success this year,” Beaman said. “It was a special year with a great group of women on the team.”

As the 2014 recipient of the Mountain Region Coach of the Year award, Beaman becomes one of 12 finalists for ITA National Coach of the Year honors.

All six Idaho players who were in the lineup during the WAC tournament earned all-WAC honors, including WAC Player of the Year Victoria Lozano and Freshman of the Year and Galina Bykova.

Beaman coached the Idaho men and women in 2014 and led both teams to WAC championships and NCAA tournament appearances.
