EXCLUSIVE: KHQ Report Leads To Bust In Cashier Check Scam

Spokane Police busted a woman for buying cars with fake checks on Tuesday Spokane Police busted a woman for buying cars with fake checks on Tuesday
SPOKANE, Wash. -
Monday night, KHQ talked to a man who was sold his BMW on Craigslist and he thought he had found an honest buyer. However, it turned out that buyer passed off a fake cashier's check that even fooled the bank. The man's car was gone.

Whitney Wieber and her boyfriend saw our story on Monday night and felt like they were victims of the same scam. So on Tuesday night they were driving in their car searching for their Dodge pickup. Just a few days ago, just like the man who was selling his BMW, they sold their pickup to a woman who identified herself as "Jayce Erickson," who used a fake cashier's check.

While they were looking for the truck, Whitney and her boyfriend stopped to talk to an officer. They told him their story and also gave him a description of the woman including some distinctive tattoos. Thanks to that information officers were able to identify a woman well known to them.

When police got to the suspect's house near Howard and Indiana, they found two stolen trucks behind the home in an alley and the keys to the truck were found in the home along with the suspect, 50-year-old Annette Paola.

Officers arrested Paola and she's now facing multiple charges including Theft and Forgery. Inside one of the stolen trucks, officers also found another fake check made out for the purchase of an Audi TT.  They are asking anyone who may have used Craigslist in the last week to sell an Audi to contact Crime Check because they believe there could be even more stolen cars out there.
