RICHLAND, WA - The Department of Energy held a public meeting Wednesday about Hanford's budget for the next two years and their cleanup priorities.

DOE Office of River Protection representatives shared with the public a look at their vision for the next few years of progress with tank farm cleanup.

And with mounting concerns after chemical vapor exposure to dozens of tank farm workers, people want answers about what happens next.

ORP emphasized they are pushing for progress at the tanks and construction on the Waste Treatment Plant with the money they've got in their budget. ORP explained their 2015 budget is $1,235,000 and the estimated 2016 budget is $1,931,900.

Representatives explained that with those funds they will maintain tank farm safety and progress with retrievals. As for the Vit Plant, they will continue design and construction and complete low activity waste installations.

ORP reminded people that whatever progress is made at the site will be done safety.

"There's a lot of activity going on out there and we are really in a mode of solving those vapor issues and not having that recycle into a future group or risk," said J.D. Dowell, Office of River Protection Deputy Manager.

A concern citizen attending the meeting shared her thoughts with us.
"The cleanup that's left is the hard stuff and so I'm really glad that they're concentrating on that. There are people out there working hard and it's dangerous work some of it," said Susan Leckband.

ORP says they would like the public to share their input. The deputy manager said in the meeting that his boss looks at all the messages he gets and he encourages people to send in their thoughts.
