YAKIMA, WA - After two public forums this week, birth defects in our region continue to be a top priority for the State Health Department.

Researchers are trying to find any common factors between these cases, but there is something you can do to make sure you are protected. While studies have not shown a single factor that could be causing the defects, the three-year study focused a lot on the high levels of nitrates in drinking water as a possibility.

If you live in the lower Yakima Valley, you are eligible for a free test of your private well.

"There's no agency that tests their well for them. They are responsible for doing that themselves. Responsible well owners should get their wells tested at least once a year to check for bacteria and nitrates," said Lisa Freund from Yakima County Public Services.

If you are interested in a well test just call the Health Department at 509-249-6508.

You will want to act fast as the testing runs only until May 30th. They will test any private well in the lower Yakima Valley that is not on Yakama Nation lands.
