YAKIMA, WA - A Yakima Police Officer goes above and beyond the call of duty after getting a phone call from an older couple who just had something stolen from them.

It was just like any other Sunday for the Parnell's, spending time with the grandkids and catching the Mariner's game on TV. But unfortunately, on that peaceful day several items were stolen from their front porch, including a brand new hanging basket. So they called the police.

"I did not expect them to come out and take fingerprints or nothing of that nature, but I thought that they should be aware about the activity that's going on in the different neighborhoods," said Ted Parnell.

Yakima Police Officer Mark Andrews took the call.

"So I felt bad for her and told her we can take a report, and she didn't think a report was going to do any good because the chances of finding it weren't very well," said Andrews.

But Officer Andrews didn't stop at that phone call.

"He went in and got a hanging basket and brought it out, and I thought what is going on," said Pat Parnell.

"It just took a couple of minutes of talking, and she recognized my voice and she gave me a hug, and she was pretty excited about the plants," said Andrews. "Couldn't believe that we did that."

Andrews and his wife bought the Parnell's a brand new hanging basket and that kind gesture has created a friendship between the two couples.

It has also reinforced a strong appreciation for our local law enforcement.

"They don't get the credit that they're due for the extra things, and I'm sure that Mark Andrews is not the only only police officer that goes out of his way periodically or daily who knows," said Ted Parnell. "But they will do things for us like that."
