Crime Tracker: Patio Furniture Target For Metal Thieves

Posted: Updated:

KHQ.com - Recyclers are keeping their eye out for manhole covers stolen from the old Costco property in East Spokane.  Someone stole 2 manhole covers and metal grates from the property on East 3rd. It’s one of the latest thefts showing just how far metal thieves are willing to go to get some quick cash. Crime Tracker Kalae Chock tells us those thieves are also after metal that you might not think would be likely target: patio furniture.

A man in the North Central neighborhood tells Kalae that thieves stole his metal patio stove from his yard. He says he and his mother have lived in the neighborhood for 20 years and that thefts like this are becoming more common. He told Kalae he locked up other metals in his yard that he thought would be a target, but said he had no idea that a patio stove would be attractive to thieves.

Recyclers pay cash for more than just copper. They buy all kinds of metal and that’s why many of the items people leave outside during the summer months can be susceptible to criminals trying to make a quick buck. Those items include chairs, flowerpots, yard ornaments, mobiles and even copper pieces on hoses.

To protect property consider locking it up when you aren’t using it. Others might consider chaining it down. Also, consider a fence and putting your yard furniture in a spot that isn’t visible from the street. You can also light the area. A thief might be more likely to bypass your property if there’s a chance they’ll be seen. Finally, most importantly, be aware. Actually putting away your yard furniture can be a nuisance and for some unrealistic, but being aware that it happens is the first step in protecting your property.
