The division one national track meet is in Eugene, Oregon next weekend and Montana State is sending three athletes to compete.

Among those athletes is Jeff Mohl, who will be competing in the decathlon.

And while Jeff excels on the track, he also excels in his academics.

Next week Jeff Mohl will be lacing up his track shoes for the final time.

To finish up his five year career, Jeff will be competing at the highest level, the division one national championships.

"I'm hoping to place top 8, at least,” said Mohl. “My preseason goal was top 5, which I think I can do if I have a good meet. I should be able to get top 8 with just a pretty good meet, I think."

Jeff has aspirations to be one of the best track athletes in the country.

But he also has plans after sports.

He's received a degree in mechanical engineering from Montana State and this fall will be attending Duke University.

"I'm doing a neurobiology PhD program up there. I want to work with neuroprosthetics-prosthetics and robotic arms and stuff like that for people who have amputations."

Jeff says he's learned valuable lessons in balancing school work and track.

"You can't just pay attention to track when you have a competition, and you can't just only pay attention to school when you have a test, because then you're not going to be prepared,” Mohl said. “It's kind of like, you kind of learn the relationship between all the boring work you do when no one is watching and that carries over into everything else you do too."

"He just never settles for less than the best he can do in anything that he does,” said Assistant Coach Erin Jones-Graf. So when he's doing that out on the track and doing it in the classroom, it's just something that carries over on its own."

At Duke in the fall Jeff will be focused on his PhD, but he's not completely ruling out track.

"I don't know if it's something I'll have time to do. I don't really want to do track just to do it. If I'm not going to keep getting better then it's something I don't want to do at all,” said Mohl. “So we'll see."
