New Michael's Location in Union Gap Opens to Long Line

Posted: Updated:
UNION GAP, WA. -- A popular store opened a new location in Union Gap Sunday morning. While the store is smaller than the previous spot, that didn't stop shopper from lining up to get inside.

With a line like this you would think it's Black Friday, but no, all these people are waiting for the grand opening of the new Michael's location in the Yakima Valley Mall. To get the first spot in the line Polly Gonzalez got here at 5:30 in the morning. That's literally the crack of dawn.
"Why do you guys like Michael's so much?" we asked.

"Crafts," Polly said. "We like to make things for gifts and for parties."

She was rewarded for her dedication with a 50 dollar gift card. Needless to say she was excited. And with a quick snip of the ribbon, Polly and the rest of the anxious shoppers were off.

The new location is actually smaller than the old one, but there isn't any shortage of arts and crafts. Michael's is excited about the move because of the new store layout and hopefully more foot traffic from the Yakima Valley Mall.

"There's nothing in here that anybody needs," Matt Brown said. "This is about their hobbies, their passions, and we're just excited to be apart of the community."

Shoppers were greeted with a generous sale, gift basket giveaways and a selfie station. Even the employees got in on the fun. While today was about fun and games, it meant more to Polly, who used her 50 dollar gift card for something special.
"To remember my mom," Polly said. "Because she used to collects light houses."

I think Polly and the others can attest that the long wait for the new Michael's doors to open was definitely worth it.
