UPDATE: The vehicle has been successfully removed from the Clark Fork river by crane.

A body has been recovered from the vehicle in the Clark Fork river.

Police have confirmed the object in the Clark Fork river they've been investigating is the vehicle that crashed into the river.

Crews used probes and cameras to locate the vehicle which is upside down.

During the recovery effort the van came loose from the cable it was hooked up to. Crews are working to attach a cable to the vehicle which has moved down river.

Emergency personnel wrap up their recovery efforts for an elderly man, who reportedly drove over an embankment and into the the Clark Fork river late Tuesday afternoon. The recovery wrapped up around 9:30 p.m. due to the loss of light and the dangerous conditions of the river.

Efforts ended after crews pulled a crane onto the train trestle over the Clark Fork river, where they found an object, according to Missoula police, that may be the vehicle the man was driving.

MPD spokesman Travis Welsh said that witnesses, who saw the incident near the Taco John's restaurant on West Broadway, reported it at about 4:35 p.m.

Welsh said that witnesses told police officers that the man, who appeared to be in his 60's or 70's, was driving a maroon SUV.  They said that the man stopped in the middle of the parking lot, when the vehicle suddenly accelerated and went down an embankment and into the Clark Fork River.

"I looked over the embankment before I had a chance to smoke, and I saw him floating down the river. I saw people walking down the sidewalk, so I started screaming that a guy was floating down the river. Then three other people came to help me and we chased him down to the railroad crossing, and that's when we lost him," said Jesse Reed, the witness who made the police report.

Emergency officials used boats, jet skis and divers to search the river for any signs of the missing man. A MedStar Helicopter also scoured the area by air.  Search and rescue crews were able to locate an object at about 6:30 p.m., but authorities have not confirmed if it is the vehicle of the missing man.
