Ron Cey Named Greatest Spokane Indian of All Time

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Thousands of votes were cast, all of the polls have been tallied and former All-Star Ron Cey has been named SWX's Greatest Spokane Indian of All Time after defeating fellow finalist Carlos Beltran by taking an unexpected 80 percent of the votes in the final round. 

Cey also upset former Spokane Indians and Los Angeles Dodgers legends Tommy Lasorda and Steve Garvey in the first two rounds to advance and become the eventual winner. In the first round it was closest matchup of the whole event with Lasorda almost pulling it out with a late surge of voting. In the second round the folks over at Cougfan.com caught wind and Cey trounced Garvey when the 10-time All-Star was the contest's No. 1 seed. 

Cey was an All-Star in his own right in his time with the Indians during the 1971 season. The Penguin finished with a .328 batting average, 123 RBI, 85 R, 32 HR and an OPS of .988, prompting a call up to the majors later in 1971. Some of the best numbers put up Spokane history. His MLB career didn't disappoint either. Cey finished with six All-Star appearances and was the 1981 World Series MVP. 

Beltran had the pedigree and he had the votes in the earlier rounds--beating out Gonzaga's Royce Bolinger and then Ian Kinsler. But in the end, the eight-time All-Star didn't have enough left in the tank to overcome Cey and his Cougar supporters.
