Celebration Held For Montana Make-A-Wish Kid

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA - An 11 year-old Montana boy's dreams came true when he was taken on a trip to Disney World.

He arrived home on Thursday, but the magic didn't end there. A festive barbeque was held to welcome 11-year-old Kyle Sharbono home to Frenchtown.

Sirens went off as a string of fire trucks and ambulances arrived at the Frenchtown Pond State Park, bringing Kyle to his barbeque.

"They made his day, he loved Disney World, he loved the plane ride, and he loved this," said his mother, Sally Sharbono.

Kyle even got to be a firefighter for a few minutes when firefighters set up a fire for him to put out.

"My son's really scared of sirens and fire trucks. He always thinks negative, so this puts a positive light in his eyes now," Sally said.

With the help of Make-A-Wish Montana, Kyle's parents started planning the trip to Disney World and his homecoming celebration about six months ago.

"We like to tell the kids they can do anything in the world, and if they could do one thing, what would they choose," said Kate Springer, a Make-A-Wish volunteer.

Kyle was selected by the group because of his serious medical conditions.

"Kyle's the best, he's just the sweetest kid, and I'm so happy to see him smiling like this," Springer said.

He was was an eight-week-old preemie, and several months after his parents adopted him, they discovered he would spend most of his life in a wheel chair.

"We found out he's got Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He's lost all his leg muscles, he can't walk anymore. He's in a wheel chair full-time now," Sally said.

Kyle chose to go to Disney World, because of his love of animals, and his parents say it was a trip full of experiences he'll never forget.

"I took him on Space Mountain, and he was scared at first, but once he rode it down, he wanted to go on more and more and more rides," said Kyle's father, Roger Sharbono.

They say now, they're just looking forward to getting some rest.

"The kids really enjoyed it, but it was just a lot of walking, and a lot of people, you know something we're not used to," Roger said.

Make-A-Wish Montana is a non-profit that grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions.
