Metal Thieves Going To Great Lengths With AC Units

Posted: Updated:
KENNEWICK, WA - NBC Right Now continues to investigate reports of stolen equipment that can be used for metal scrap. This week it appears thieves went to great lengths to haul away one of these items.

A business in the 4300 block of 27th Avenue in Kennewick reported to police this week that their big air conditioning unit had been taken. The owner of the building asked us not to name the business to avoid being targeted again. Replacing the old AC unit with a newer unit has cost the owner thousands of dollars.

"We're going to see about bolting them down. That would make it harder to do and if it was hard, they will go some place else."

The thief first had to cut the electrical wiring out before taking the unit. It appears whoever took the air conditioner knew what they were doing. Workers at the business joked that if they did not, the thief would have been in for a shocking surprise.
