5 Hour Standoff Ends In Downtown Spokane

A standoff with a suicidal man ended after five hours in downtown Spokane Friday evening. 

It started just after 3:00pm on Friday when officers responded to a mental health call near Browne and Sprague in downtown Spokane.

When they arrived they found a man sitting in a grassy area just north of the railroad tracks with a large knife.

Refusing to put the knife down, officers set up a perimeter and used a negotiator to talk to the man.

Over the next few hours the man continued to ignore commands from officers while smoking cigarettes and holding the knife pointed at himself.

Then just after 8:00pm, officers used a flash bang grenade and beanbag rounds to take the man  into custody.

Officers recovered the knife and also a handgun found in a bag the man had. The handgun was a replica.

He was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

    VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. - A Michigan school district is warning parents that someone driving an unmarked school bus tried picking up children Thursday in several neighborhoods. Van Buren Public Schools quickly alerted parents about the incident. “Do not allow your students to approach any bus not clearly marked with Van Buren Public Schools on it,” reads the statement posted by Pam Johnson, administrative assistant to the superintendent.
