SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Shock (6-7) dropped a Pacific Division road matchup against the San Jose SaberCats (9-4) by a score of 47-37 on Saturday night in a game televised on CBS Sports Network.

Shock starting quarterback Brian Zbydniewski was replaced by Erik Meyer, making his first game appearance since being injured on May 4, in the fourth quarter. Meyer led the Shock on two touchdown drives to close out the game.

Zbydniewski finished the night 16-30 for 156 yards and one touchdown, while Meyer went 9-14 for 88 yards and two touchdowns.

Shock wide receiver Rashaad Carter finished the night with three receptions for 50 yards and one touchdown while also contributing one touchdown rushing.

The game started off with a bang for Spokane when Terrance Sanders returned the opening kickoff 57 yards for a touchdown to give the Shock a very early 7-0 lead. Following a pair of turnovers from both teams, San Jose found the end zone thanks to a 1-yard touchdown run by Dominique Curry to tie the game 7-7. After a Shock turnover on downs the SaberCats took their first lead of the game on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Stanley to offensive lineman Rich Ranglin, putting San Jose up 14-7 at the end of the first.

Carter and the Shock opened the second quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run out of the pistol formation to tie the game 14-14. On the following San Jose drive Shock defensive back Bryant Nnabuife came away with an interception after a Stanley pass bounced off an official in play. Taylor Rowan hit a 21-yard field goal on the extra possession to give Spokane the lead back 17-14. A quick drive for the SaberCats followed, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by JJ Payne, putting San Jose up 21-17. A pair of touchdowns closed out the first half with San Jose on top by only three at 27-24.

After receiving the kickoff to open the second half Stanley found Rod Harper for a 14-yard touchdown strike to extend the SaberCats lead to 34-24. A Shock turnover on downs and a Stanley touchdown pass to Curry brought the third quarter to a close with the SaberCats leading 41-24.

After a San Jose field goal the Shock found themselves down 44-24 when they replaced Zbydniewski with Meyer looking to spark a comeback attempt. Meyer led the Shock on a scoring drive in his first action in over a month, capped by a 9-yard touchdown toss to Nicheren Flowers. Curry recovered the ensuing Shock onside kick attempt and hit a field goal to go back up by three possessions at 47-30. With only 17 seconds remaining Meyer found Carter for a 15-yard touchdown to close out the scoring with San Jose up 47-37.

The Shock return home to face off against the San Antonio Talons on Friday, June 20 at 7 p.m. PDT in Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. Tickets can be bought for as low as $14 by visiting SpokaneShock.com.
