YAKIMA, WA - Even though Yakima did not win the All-America City title, the community is still proud, and the delegates who went to the conference said there is always next year to win.

A group of 18 delegates from Yakima went to Denver this past weekend to make their case of why Yakima should have the title, highlighting certain aspects of Yakima like Pacific Northwest University, a successful anti-gang initiative and a local youth music program.

The results came out last night, but after much anticipation Yakima’s name was not on the list of winners.

The National Civic League started giving out the All-American City Award back in 1949 showcasing communities with outstanding civic accomplishments and recognizes them for successfully addressing pressing challenges such as housing, government innovation, job development, educational improvement and neighborhood and commercial revitalization.

10 cities win every year. The last time Yakima won was in 1994.

The closest city that did get an award for All-America City, and the only one in the northwest, is Independence, Oregon near Salem.
