Authorities ID Body Found on Homestake Pass as Missing Runner

Posted: Updated:
BUTTE - A body found by hikers on Homestake Pass last week is that of a Butte man who went missing the day he was to talk to Helena Union officials about $175,000 that was missing.

Jefferson County Undersheriff Mike Johnson said Monday an autopsy confirmed the body that was found southeast of Butte on June 8 was that of 54-year-old James Ryan.

The business manager for the Sheet Metal Workers International Association was reported missing on Feb. 19.

Searchers and friends of Ryan had looked in the Homestake Pass area on and off since February after Ryan's work vehicle was found at a trailhead about a half-mile north of Interstate 90.

Johnson says the investigation into Ryan's cause of death continues, but it does not appear foul play was involved. The FBI is investigating the missing money.
