YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima Police Chief has fired a detective for improperly sharing information with a potential witness in a double-murder case.

Detective Geoff Gronewald had been placed on leave in February pending an internal investigation.

Chief Dominic Rizzi fired the 18-year veteran Tuesday saying Det. Gronewald breached the public's trust. Gronewald had a romantic relationship with the former girlfriend of a man who was found shot to dead with another man back in December 2012 in a car in the Yakima Canyon.

The Yakima Police Patrolman's Association says the union will be reviewing the matter with its attorney.
