Dump The Pump Day Encourages Public Transit Use Nation Wide

Posted: Updated:
NBC RIGHT NOW-- Thursday is National Dump The Pump Day.

The American Public Transportation Association started Dump the Pump day nine-years ago to support mass transit and encourage people to ditch their cars and dump the pump.

Staff with the association said you can reduce your carbon foot print, and save money by riding public transit, walking, carpooling or riding a bike.

The group said the average family could save around $10,000.00 per year by taking public transportation rather than driving.

And with summer right around the corner, gas prices are going up in our region.

According to AAA, the national price for a gallon of regular is $3.67. In Yakima the average is $3.90 and in the Tri-Cities it is $3.77.

Staff with the APTA also said using public transportation has a positive economic impact on communities. For every dollar spent on public transit, $4.00 go back into the community.
