RICHLAND, WA - You may go in and out of it every day, but do you know if your garage door is safe?

Many of our garage doors are old with outdated safety features. All new doors are built with automatic reverse triggers, either lasers that detect motion or sensors that can tell when the door is hitting something or someone. June is garage door safety month and they held a safety seminar Friday at Richardson's Garage Doors in Richland. Experts offered advice on how you can test your door to make sure no one in your family gets hurt.

"We get in a hurry and we decide that, 'I had to run in the house and then I want to run out and the car's still running so I try to jump over the beam and if I trip and fall I want to make sure that that opener is going to go back up," said Tom Richardson who owns the shop.

When Richardson goes out on a repair he uses a small block of wood, closes the door on it, and then sees if the door does in fact reverse. He says if you mount those lasers on your doors make sure they are no more than 6 inches from the ground. In that way they will detect small children if they fall.
