Kennewick Police Arrest Man for Theft After Just Getting Out of Jail

KENNEWICK, WA - Kennewick Police arrested a man over the weekend for stealing a car just hours after he got out of jail.

Police say 24 year old Marcos Montiel had been out of jail for two hours Sunday morning when he stole a Honda Civic from an apartment complex on the 1100 block of W. 10th Ave.

"Believe it or not, people who get out of jail steal cars more often than you might think. They're not worried about going back to jail. They've just gotten out and they don't mind going back again. It's unfortunate but it's the way some people live," said Sgt. Ken Lattin from the Kennewick Police Department.

Police spotted the car near the intersection of W. 10th Ave. and Union St. and chased Montiel to a dead end on 12th Ave. near Columbia Center Boulevard.

Police say Montiel is a documented gang member and has been booked into jail for auto theft, eluding and driving on a suspended license.

Police say the Civic had a defective ignition switch and did not need a specific key to start the engine.
