YAKIMA, WA - We're learning more about the former Yakima police detective who was fired after a long investigation into his questionable behavior. Now, Geoff Gronewald is in even more hot water.
Police say Detective Gronewald looked at sensitive details about several recent officer involved shooting without permission. Detective Gronewald was fired after an investigation found he inappropriately shared information about a double murder from back in 2012 with a girlfriend of one of the victims.
Now police say while the investigation was being conducted, Gronewald looked up the details of three different officer involved shootings from earlier this year. We spoke with the President of the Yakima Police Patrolman's Association who says there is a simple explanation.
"He was taking a look at it to see, well maybe this was related to what he was investigating," Tony Patlan said. "So there were some true reasons why he was doing it. It wasn't for malicious reasons, it wasn't out to make profit or anything like that."
The Patrolman's Association says they will look into all the details of the investigation before deciding whether or not to appeal Gronewald's termination.
The Yakima Police Department asserts that Gronewald had no good reason to look at those cases.
