Chiefs Expect NHL Draft Selections

Posted:

SPOKANE, Wash. - The NHL Draft begins today, June 27, in Philadelphia as 30 franchises look to build their prospect pool for the future. The first round will be held tonight, beginning at 4 p.m. PT, while rounds 2-7 will fall tomorrow, beginning at 7 a.m. PDT.

In all, 210 selections will be made during the two-day event, with the vast majority of this year’s eligible players being born between January 1, 1994 and September 14, 1996.

Three eligible Spokane Chiefs have earned recognition from NHL scouts leading up to the draft: forwards Adam Helewka and Dominic Zwerger, as well as defenseman Colton Bobyk.

Adam Helewka

Helewka, a 6’1” forward from Burnaby, BC, posted career highs in all offensive categories during the 2013-14 season, scoring 23 goals and 27 assists for 50 points despite missing 10 games due to injury early in the season. The highlight of his season may have come on November 23, when he scored a career-high four goals against Vancouver.

While eligible for the NHL Draft last year, Helewka was overlooked despite being named the Chiefs’ Rookie of the Year after a 10 goal, 17 assist season.

Helewka was ranked 72nd among North American Skaters in the NHL’s Central Scouting final rankings preceding this year’s draft. The Chiefs originally added Helewka to their list in December, 2011.

Colton Bobyk

Bobyk completed his rookie WHL campaign last season, posting 5 goals and 7 assists in 56 games played. The 6’2” blueliner from Red Deer, Alberta, also tallied 62 penalty minutes.

Known for his booming slapshot, Bobyk was noticed by NHL scouts during his first WHL season, ranking 130th in the NHL’s Central Scouting final rankings. He was originally acquired by the Chiefs in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft as he was selected in the 10th Round (217th overall).

Dominic Zwerger

Zwerger, a 6’0” forward who came to Spokane via the 2013 CHL Import Draft (106th pick), was named the Chiefs’ Rookie of the Year after scoring 16 goals and 10 assists for 26 points despite being limited to 53 games due to injury early in the season. A native of Dornbirn, Austria, Zwerger joined former notable Chiefs Stefan Ulmer and Michael Grabner as standouts to come to Spokane from Austria.

The Spokane Chiefs’ Bud Light Opening Night at Spokane Arena is Saturday, September 27. Ticket packages for the 2014-15 regular season are on sale now and begin as low as $96. Stop by the Chiefs’ Ticket Office or call a Chiefs Ticket Account Executive at (509) 535-PUCK for more information.
