SPOKANE, Wash. -- Former Vanderbilt guard Eric McClellan has committed to play basketball at Gonzaga University, as reported by CBSSports.com

The 6-foot-4 shooter led Vandy with 14.3 points per game through the first 12 of the season but was dismissed from the Commodores team for violating a university academic policy. McClellan also averaged 4.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game while on the court last season.

According to CBSSports.com's Jon Rothstein, McClellan will be eligible to play during the second semester of the upcoming 2014-15 season as long as he complete's three courses over the next 7 weeks. Gonzaga could also file a waiver with the NCAA to try and allow the Austin, Texas native to play the entire season if he completes his academic requirements over the next seven weeks.

Regardless of when he can play, McClellan will join a backcourt unit loaded with talent in Kevin Pangos, Gary Bell Jr. and USC transfer Byron Wesley.

"They're (Gonzaga's staff) giving me an opportunity to resurrect my career," McClellan said to CBS Sports. "I couldn't be happier. There's a lot of honesty and trust between us right now."

Gonzaga returns three starters in Pangos, Bell Jr. and 7-foot-1 big man Przmek Karnowski and will most likely feature Kentucky transfer forward Kyle Wiltjer after he sat out the 2013-14 season due to NCAA transfer regulations. Should McClellan be able to play immediately, as many as three transfers (McClellan, Wesley and Wiltjer) could play significant rolls for the Zags this upcoming season.
