New Law to Open Adoption Records in Washington

Posted: Updated:
TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - A new law in Washington will allow more adoptees to look at their birth certificates to identify their parents and learn about their medical history.

The new law goes into effect Tuesday and expands the option to anyone adopted before October 1993.

The Washington Health Department notes birth parents can request that they not be contacted. The department's Center for Health Statistics warns the high volume of applications means it could take several weeks for the department to answer.
