NBCRightNow.com - Starting Tuesday local law enforcement agencies and Washington state troopers will be cracking down on drunk drivers.
Extra officers will be patrolling the roadways from July 1st through the 13th. It's all part of a summer DUI campaign in Benton and Franklin Counties to enforce safer driving.
This year, the Traffic Safety Task Force is broadening its enforcement approach by combining three campaigns designed to impact impaired driving. The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and "Buzzed, Busted, Broke" campaigns focus on alcohol consumption and the fact that "buzzed driving" is impaired driving. The "Drive High, Get a DUI" campaign draws attention to the problem of driving after smoking pot and the fact that it is also impaired driving. However, being high on any drug while driving is considered impaired and will result in a DUI arrest.
Michael Aldridge, Target Zero Manager said they want people to know driving under any kind of influence, be it drugs or alcohol is illegal and dangerous.
"Call 911 it's an appropriate use of the 911 to report an impaired driver or an erratic driver that's endangering the public," Aldridge said.
During last years campaign 100 drivers were cited and 46 impaired drivers were arrested. Of the 100 citations, 39 were for speeding, 6 for cell phone use, and 10 for seatbelt violations. Officers made 38 arrests for other crimes including 5 felony warrants, 12 misdemeanor warrants, 9 misdemeanor crimes, and 12 driving while license suspended or revoked.
