RICHLAND, WA - The Stevens Drive Extension continues to pop up at Richland City Council meetings.

On Tuesday, the council voted to approve selling Elliot Street to a private land owner. Elliot Street may be hard to miss - it's a small street that connects Wellsian Way to Goethals Drive.

With the Stevens Drive Extension, the city says they no longer need Elliot Street.

Just two weeks ago, the city bought some nearby property from the same land owner for the extension project.

"It doesn't happen a lot that we build new streets and get rid of old ones, but it's a procedure that's set up in state law and it's common practice how we're doing it," Public Works Director Pete Rogalsky explained.

The Duportail Stevens Corridor Project will extend Stevens Drive from Wellsian Way to Lee Boulevard with a three lane road.

The city says the changes will help the flow of traffic and open possibilities for more commercial development.
