NBCRightNow.com - Many people will be out celebrating Independence Day Friday but one group in particular may have a harder time doing so, some of our nation's veterans.

Fireworks can trigger some bad memories for veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.

A local veteran tells me the sounds, smells, and even heat of the fireworks can bring back vivid experiences of being in combat.

Shawn Bruner says he and many of his friends in the military like to celebrate the holiday but it is not easy.

"It's very scary, I don't like being around outside, I don't like being around a lot of people, I have to have friends around me a lot of the time or it's very hard to cope with this," said Bruner.

Bruner said one way you can help is by inviting a veteran to share in fireworks displays with you.

They do not want to be caught off guard when fireworks go off, he says they rather have a heads up.

If you or someone you know need help coping and wish to talk with someone you can contact the veterans crisis line at 1-800-273-8255.
