Badger Canyon Fire Contained, Officials say ATV Riders Could Have Caused It

Posted: Updated:
RICHLAND/BENTON COUNTY, WA - A fire that roared through more than 500 acres of Badger Canyon sparked around 2:00 p.m. Sunday

A Benton County Fire District One spokesman says it could have been sparked by a couple of people riding ATV's.

"(ATV Riders) are required to have a spark arrestor in their exhaust system and if they eliminate this spark system arrestor or it fails then the carbon within the exhaust system can jump out onto the natural cover and start a fire, it happens quite frequently," said an official from Benton County Fire District One.

The people responsible have not yet been located, however.

At around 4 p.m. crews had the fire about 75 percent contained. Crews expect to get it fully contained by 7 p.m. Sunday.

The fire burned along Badger Canyon Road and police blocked off Badger Road at the intersections of both Dallas Road and Webber Canyon Road for a short time.
