Yakima Rescue Crews Save Boy Stranded in Naches River

YAKIMA, WA - A 15-year-old boy is safe after becoming stranded over the weekend in the Naches River near the 3400 block of S. Naches Rd.

The Yakima County Sheriff's Office says the boy was swimming around 1 p.m. Sunday when his inner tube was caught in the current and swept downstream. The boy got out of the water on an island and made several unsuccessful attempts to get back across the river. The boy's mother asked him to stay on the island while she called for help.

Rescuers arrived and got the boy a life jacket and rope. Crews got him safely back across the river and reunited him with his family. No one was hurt.

The Yakima  County Sheriff's Office wants to remind residents to take proper precautions while enjoying rivers and lakes, including the use of personal flotation devices. Deputies say many local waterways have deceptively fast currents and drop-offs.
