UW study: Gun Victims More Likely to be Shot Again

Posted: Updated:
SEATTLE (AP) - A new study from the University of Washington shows people hospitalized with a gunshot wound are 30 times more likely to come back to the hospital with another firearm injury than those hospitalized for another medical reason.

Gunshot victims also are twice as likely to be arrested for future violent or firearm-related crime.

The research presents some ideas for next steps including treating firearms injuries as a public health problem to prevent future shootings.

The researchers believe a combination of approaches may work, similar to the way Seattle pioneered treatment of people with drinking problems.
