Calendar Spread Meant To Raise Self Esteem

Posted: Updated:

Looking at calendar spreads out of Sports Illustrated or Vogue can really take a toll on your self esteem.

The Montana Gay Men's Task Force wants to build up positive body image with its own calendar of men modeling under the big sky.

Since they started this summer, 20 people who identify as men have signed up to model for the Mentana Calendar Project. You've heard of people putting together a saucy spread to raise money, but the Task Force is behind the calendar to show that pretty can look a lot of different ways.

"If you don't feel good about yourself, the way you look, the way you feel, don't feel like you have any worth, then you're not really going to be concerned about protecting yourself," said David Herrera, the director of the Task Force.

Namely, protecting yourself against STD's like HIV.

The men are coming from all over Montana, and it started with a Facebook announcement. Christopher Gehring, a University of Montana student, came up with the idea and he's actually posed.

"I'm not a very shy person so it was a little easier for me, but it was a little interesting to have someone have a camera on you while you're kind of in the buff," said Gehring.

Gehring wants to publish the calendar by 2015. Anyone who's not in the calendar, though, can still show up in the blog and wherever they're featured, you can read about what it was like to bear almost everything for the camera in their own words.

"I felt very good about myself after I was done," said Gehring, "I felt very confident."

All the photography, and the project itself, runs on donations.

It's not too late to get involved, whether it's fiscally or facially.
