KENNEWICK, WA - Rising gas prices could be to blame for a recent string of gas thefts around the area, the latest one happened Wednesday night.

Kennewick Police say people might try using a locking gas cap to make sure their tank is not empty next time you turn on your car.

Just this year, Kennewick police have investigated 16 cases of gas thefts and 12 of those happened in the last two months! Police say thieves are not targeting a specific area, they are all over the place.

On Wednesday night, someone reported 14 gallons of gas stolen from their tank right after getting home from filling up at the gas station.

Sgt. Ken Lattin, Kennewick Police Department said "We have heard this in numerous occasions on these cases where people said 'I just filled up my tank', so it is possible that based on that information that people are getting followed home from the gas station."

Five of the vehicles targeted are Ben-Franklin transit van pool vans left in parking lots overnight.

And although police have investigated 16 of these cases they say many crimes go un-reported or unnoticed and recommend people keep an eye on that gas gauge.

While gas prices are staying high, police say these locking gas caps are probably the best option right now.
